How to Build a Corrugated Metal Fence Yourself: Step‑by‑Step Guide

Today, among owners of country properties, a fence made of corrugated metal (profiled sheet) enjoys special popularity. Not long ago, profiled sheets were considered plain, simple material used exclusively for roofing small outbuildings, production workshops, garages, hangars, and for erecting fences around various construction sites. The situation has changed.

Modern manufacturers have brought galvanized sheets to a new, high level by approaching production with imagination and improving quality characteristics. As a result, corrugated metal fences are now used as enclosures for private houses and countryside cottages.

The innovative material is still a galvanized metal sheet, but its appearance has become more attractive. For example, the front side is now coated with a polymer layer that enhances protective properties and adds colour. Therefore, contemporary builders gladly use profiled sheets not only for roofing agricultural structures but also for constructing reliable fences. Another undeniable advantage of the material is the simplicity of its installation, which even a beginner can handle.

To correctly make a corrugated metal fence yourself, you need to become familiar with the construction rules. The procedure is fairly simple and does not require huge financial outlays, but it does demand thorough preparation. Observing all construction stages is essential.

Material Calculation

To perform the work at a professional level, the craftsman will need a specific list of materials. Before starting construction, appropriate calculations must be made:

  • Profiled sheets – there are two types: fence and roofing. Both can be used for a DIY fence because they are interchangeable. Specialists recommend choosing a sheet with a ridge not exceeding 21 mm for fence construction.
  • Posts – they can be brick, stone, metal profiles, pipes of various diameters, or logs. The most preferred option is pipe posts: they are inexpensive and easy to install. Ideal choices are round pipes with a diameter of 59 mm or square sections 60 × 60 mm.
  • Cross rails (lags) – practice shows that rectangular metal tubes 60 × 25 mm are the most convenient.
  • Self‑tapping screws for fastening the profiled sheets.
  • Paint – selected to match the colour of the sheets and to treat the rails and posts.
  • Gravel and cement.

To determine the required amount of profiled sheet, first decide the fence height. Galvanized sheets are produced in a standard length of 12 m, so it is best to divide them into a multiple number of parts. To calculate the number and size of posts, remember that each post length must equal the fence height plus an additional 30 % of that height, which will be buried in the ground. The optimal spacing between posts is 2 m. The quantity of cross rails is calculated based on the site plan, i.e., the perimeter of the fence. If the fence height exceeds 2 m, the rails are installed in three levels.

Work Stages

  1. Ground works – start from the gate post and mark the position of each subsequent support. Using a garden auger, dig holes slightly deeper than required. Fill the bottom of each hole with gravel and compact it to create a stable base.
  2. Prepare concrete mix – do not mix a large batch at once; small batches are sufficient for a few holes. The recipe is 1 part of M400 cement to 4 parts of gravel.
  3. Install and concrete the posts – set the posts perfectly vertical. When pouring concrete, tap the formwork to release trapped air. Allow the concrete to cure for several days before proceeding.
  4. Attach the cross rails – there are two common methods:
  • Welding – the simplest and most reliable, but it requires welding equipment and skills.
  • Bolted connection – drill through‑holes in posts and rails, then join them with nuts and bolts (or two nuts). Bolted joints are less reliable. Keep the attachment point at least 20 cm from the top of the post or from the ground. After installation, paint the rails.
  1. Mount the profiled sheets – start from the gate side and work outward. Use self‑tapping screws and an electric screwdriver; each rail receives one screw line. Each sheet must overlap the previous one by one full wave.
  2. Finishing touches – paint the posts and install the gate.

Following these steps will give you a durable, attractive corrugated metal fence built entirely by yourself.
