How to Build a Corrugated Metal Sheet Fence Yourself

Corrugated metal sheets were once used exclusively for facades or roofing, but today the installation of a fence made of profiled sheet is quite popular, as the modern material has proven itself in the best possible way. Easy assembly, anti‑corrosion properties, low cost, and a wide range of colored coatings make profiled sheets a leading choice among other “competitors” on the construction market.

The main advantage of sheet material is its wear resistance. Such a fence easily withstands any temperature fluctuations, from scorching heat to the harshest frosts, so it can be used in various climatic conditions. The barrier thoroughly hides from outsiders everything that happens on the enclosed territory. In addition, it prevents large and small animals from entering the property. Fences made of profiled metal sheet are an optimal choice for a dacha. Unlike their wooden counterparts, they do not require costly maintenance, so the upkeep expenses are minimal.

A solid fence of sheet material looks modern and solid, yet it does not attract excessive attention. The coating of the corrugated sheet can be any colour, so the fence easily fits into any landscape design. Most manufacturers use a durable polymer paint that does not fade under direct sunlight and resists other natural influences.

Preparatory work

First, the builder must decide the length of the fence. Then the layout is marked. Starting from the gate, mark points every 2.5 m where the post holes will be dug. If the fence is being built in a region with strong prevailing winds, the distance between marks should be reduced to 1.2 m. Experience shows that with a hole depth of only half a metre and a spacing of 0.5 m between posts, the fence can be blown over and knocked to the ground.

For a standard situation, during earthworks it is enough to dig holes 0.25 × 0.25 m. However, much depends on the soil type. If the ground belongs to the soft category, significant settling of individual sections, including those where the posts are installed, is possible. In this case it is best to create a strip foundation, into which the supports holding the profiled sheet will be placed.

Installation process

To prevent the soil from settling under the load, a gravel cushion about ten centimetres high should be placed at the bottom of the holes. Then the posts are inserted, positioned strictly vertically, and poured with a mixture of sand and concrete. The upper end of each post must be sealed so that atmospheric moisture cannot enter. The installation of the support should be performed using a level or plumb line. To keep the post from tilting while the concrete sets, brace it with rebar or a regular metal rod.

Next, attach the transverse rails using a welding machine. The number of rails depends directly on the fence height. For a two‑metre‑high fence, three levels of transverse fastenings should be selected, spaced 300–400 mm apart. After the frame is completely assembled, all welds must be thoroughly treated with primer and two coats of a special enamel that protects the joints from degradation. Before fastening the profiled sheets, paint the entire structure. It is recommended to choose a colour that matches the inner side of the fence, visually enlarging the enclosed space.

To secure the profile to the frame, you will need rivets or self‑tapping screws. The sheets are overlapped so that, if a fastener loosens, no holes appear between sections. Fastening points should be joined with special self‑tapping screws made of high‑quality stainless or carbon‑galvanized steel. Today it is also possible to select fasteners that match the colour of the corrugated sheet, making the connections virtually invisible.

Following this step‑by‑step instruction, you can install a profiled sheet fence with your own hands. If you adhere strictly to the guide, no problems will arise. Building a low‑budget fence will not take much time; excluding the concrete curing period, the whole process takes about five to six hours.
