How to Build a DIY Flower Bed on Your Country Plot

Practically impossible to imagine a beautiful, sturdy garden without flowers, so you need to know how to make flower beds on the dacha yourself, correctly and without a professional designer. Traditionally, flower beds hold an honored place because they are considered the best landscape ornament, highlighting the main virtues of a plot while masking its existing flaws. However, it’s not that simple. Today several rules are highlighted that must be followed for a flower bed to look aesthetically appealing. Significant attention should be given to the lighting of the chosen area, the possibility of full irrigation, and the terrain relief. In addition, a dacha owner must be able to select plants for the bed according to colour, flowering period, and form.

Flower bed on the dacha

Among all principles of creating a floral composition, four main ones can be distinguished. Whether you follow them is up to you, but these rules help achieve an aesthetically attractive bed with minimal material costs:

  1. Tall plants should be planted as close to the centre as possible.
  2. To make original, beautiful dacha flower beds look more presentable, choose only harmonious colour combinations.
  3. Plants are planted more densely in the centre and much sparser toward the edges.
  4. Complex patterns should not be used for the design.

A flower bed is a specific flower plot of a regular geometric shape, raised above the general landscape. Usually this exterior element is placed near the house entrance, at the intersection of garden paths, or along an alley. Various techniques can be used for its creation.

Flower Beds from Natural Stone

To arrange a raised flower bed made of natural stone, no complex installation functions are required. First, decide on the size and shape of the bed, and only then mark the area on the plot where a low stone fence will be laid. The resulting depression is then filled with soil, and the dacha owner can start planting. This method works well if you want to embellish already existing garden flowers. If, by design, the DIY flower bed on the dacha should be built a bit higher, a little more effort is needed.

Massive, round, smooth boulders look unusual. After the future bed’s location is defined, the owner should remove ten‑to‑fifteen centimeters of the topsoil layer and fill the resulting pit with crushed stone, gravel, or sand. Around the perimeter of the future bed’s frame, a cement‑sand mixture is carefully poured and well‑compacted.

Now the walls of the bed can be laid. Stones are selected so that they fit together as tightly as possible. It is best to re‑wet each joint every two hours to compact the mortar. When the height reaches the required level, the upper part of the wall is smoothed with a special mortar that can be brushed flat or given a decorative pattern. The inner side of the artificial enclosure is treated with a waterproofing sealant. Only after the structure has completely dried can it be filled with soil and planted.

Variant from Wood

When the landscape composition already includes a gazebo or other wooden structures, using boards is the best way to create a flower bed. This type of dacha bed is considered one of the simplest solutions. Inventive dacha owners do not stress over minor details. As a fence, they often use an old barrel or drum. To prepare the “container,” carefully remove its bottom, then treat the interior with a special compound that protects the wood from rot. The bed is then placed on a pre‑cleared spot, the topsoil layer removed and the base filled with crushed stone. After the barrel or drum is installed, it is filled with soil on which the plants are placed.

A bed made of planks or logs looks presentable. For its construction, polished boards 2–3 cm thick and up to 10 cm long are needed. All sides of the material should be sealed with varnish and a sealant. Additional stakes are made, their ends treated with resin. The stakes are driven in first, then the bed walls are built around them and joined together. You can also try using only stakes, driving them close together and tightening with wire or a hoop for strength.

If the private house is built of logs with traditional chiseled walls, a bed can be made in the same style. For this, select logs of roughly equal diameter. The lower logs are cut in half, and those used to raise the wall height are joined into crowns using specially prepared slots. However, before making a wooden dacha bed, the material must again be treated with a sealant, and a rubberized membrane should be laid around the perimeter of the flower bed to ensure adequate waterproofing. To make the log construction sturdy, the logs are secured with dowels.

Classic Brick Solution

Brick constructions are considered universal because they look good on any plot. Moreover, this material can form a perfectly flat bed or an unusual curved shape. The flower bed walls can adjoin a residential house or outbuilding, but additional attention to insulation will be required.

The foundation for such a structure must be carefully prepared. A small area is levelled and poured with concrete. The thickness of the concrete layer depends on the height of the bed walls. After the foundation has fully dried, bricks are laid using the usual technique. There is nothing complicated; the main point before building a DIY flower bed on the dacha is to decide on the design, the material type, and the placement location.
